Audra McDonald's talents are unmatched in the range and variety of her work as a singer, and actor. Audra McDonald, winner of Six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was listed as one of the Time magazine's 100 most influential people. President Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -- America's highest honour for achievements in this field. She's equally comfortable in television, film and Broadway. The luminous tone of her voice will make her an ideal performer on the stage. Alongside her theatrical work she is also a prominent performer as a concert and recording artist regularly appearing at the world's foremost venues. McDonald was brought up at Fresno California by her musical parents. She studied classical music in the Juilliard School, New York. She won her first Tony Award in 1994 for the Best Performance of the Featured Actress in a musical, Carousel which was staged at Lincoln Center Theater. In the following four years, she was awarded two more Tony Awards in the featured actress category for her performance of the Broadway premieres of Terrence McNally's show Master Class (1996) and the Musical Ragtime (1998) giving her an unheard of number of Tony Awards before the age of thirty. In 2004, she won her fourth Tony for her role in the musical she played alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun. In 2012, while she was a lead actor in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess she won five Tony and also won her first Tony Award in the best actor category. The sixth Tony Award in 2014 the role of Billie Holiday of the role Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill was Broadway's most decorated performance. In 2017 she made the West End London West End debut and was nominated to receive the Olivier Award. In addition to making history with the most performances that an actor has won in a competition she also became the first person to receive the award for all four categories of acting. McDonald's other theater credits are The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999) Henry IV (2004) 110 in the Shade (2007) Twelfth Night (2009) in which she made the release of her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut, the show Shuffle Along or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921, and all That Followed (2016) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2019) as well as Ohio State Murders (2023). McDonald was first seen on TV as a drama actor in her role on the Peabody Award winner CBS series Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years. The year 1999 saw her co-starred alongside Kathy Bates in ABC's acclaimed remake of Annie. Also, she had an occasional role in NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit in the year 2000. After receiving her first Emmy award for her performance in the HBO film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning show Wit written by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson McDonald returned to network television in 2003 on the drama about politics Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. and featuring Josh Brolin. In 2006, McDonald appeared on WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year she was an actor who appeared on NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald received the 4th Emmy nomination in recognition of her performance in HBO's film special of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill in 2016. In 2021, she appeared in a telecast with Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in the film The Bite, a pandemic drama co-produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios. She starred in 2009 as she was the U.S. Attorney Liz Lawrence on CBS's legal drama The Good Wife. In 2018, McDonald returned to her role as Liz Reddick as a regular on Paramount+'s The Good Fight. She got three Critics Choice Award nods for her performance. She is also a character for HBO's The Gilded Age by Julian Fellowes.
